The Great War Centenary

From 2014 to 2018, across the world, nations, communities and individuals have been coming together to mark, commemorate and remember the lives of those who lived, fought and died in the First World War.

One hundred years on, we are all connected to the First World War, either through our own family history, the heritage of our local communities or because of its long-term impact on society and the world we live in today. 2018 marks the end of the Great War and we are providing Diversity Mark schools the opportunity to celebrate this unique event with a special battlefield tour. In addition, we will also support a number of Diversity Mark schools to visit planned exhibitions at the Imperial War Museum (IWM) as part of the Making A New World season. These exhibitions will reflect on the impact the brutal killing fields of the First World War and the resulting impact in terms of shaping the modern world.

The IWM exhibition will include Generation Hope: Life After The First World War, examining upheaval of the decade after the war, at the IWM London. Two parts of the landmark Blood Swept Lands And Seas Of Red display of 888,246 ceramic poppies will be installed at the IWM’s sites in London and Manchester, while artwork commissioned for a never-built post-war Hall of Remembrance will also be shown.
